The Story behind Albino Penis Envy
“Albino Penis Envy” as a mature fungi has several interesting properties, perhaps most noteworthy being its very small cap. The caps, thanks to their translucence, turn a deep shade of blue. The stem is unlike a traditional “Penis Envy” mushroom, being stunted and wide. While the name might cause you to giggle, this mushroom variety is no laughing matter!
Most readers here have no doubt heard of Terence McKenna, the late, great author and ethnobotanist known for his deep appreciation of magic mushrooms. The story goes that McKenna was exploring the Amazon Rainforest at some point in the early 1970s. He had the help of several indigenous guides, so it’s not like our mild-mannered friend was out there hacking away at the jungle with a machete all alone, but still, what a brave man he was.
The trip was well worth it. The claim is that during his travels, McKenna came across what he described as a “colossal†patch of mushrooms. Being as interested in mushrooms as he was, he simply couldn’t help himself and decided to extensively study the fungi. This, of course, was the first known discovery of the “Penis Envy” variety in the wild.
McKenna, who lived and worked in Colorado, wanted desperately to bring the fungi back home with him, but couldn’t due to legal restrictions in the United States. However, since mushroom spores are perfectly legal and the psilocybin spores contain no psilocybin themselves, he was able to successfully make a spore print. Nevertheless, McKenna was nervous, and he supposedly labeled his spore prints as some variation of agaricus – packed neatly between several microscopy slides.
McKenna was able to get the very first “Penis Envy” spores back to his lab, and that’s how they originally came to this country.
